2007 Cline Zinfandel
I don’t even remember why I bought this wine. I was out looking for just a couple of bottles of Zinfandel to have on hand and I thought I’d give this one a try just to see how it was. It has been a while since I’ve had anything from Cline and I thought it was time to try something totally random in the $10 price point.
Maybe next time I should do some more research.
Price: I bought this for $10.49 at Bullock’s in Woodstock.
Context: We had it with dinner, which consisted of a pan-fried sirloin that had been seasoned with sea salt and black pepper, along with some garlic bread and a salad tossed with Makato Ginger Dressing, one of my two favorites and much healthier than the usual Caesar dressing we use. The wine was decanted for about 1 1/2 hours before service and was served in our Riedel Zinfandel glasses.
The wine was somewhat aromatic, but it didn’t leap out at me like I typically expect from Zinfandel. It didn’t have a lot of spice, with most of what I got out of it being red berry fruits. On the palate, it was good for a red table wine, but didn’t have the pizazz I want when I drink Zin. It was easy to drink, with a moderate ABV of 14%, fairly mild for the grape. I’m not sure if the ginger dressing flattened out the wine or not, but next time I’ll avoid pairing the two and stick to Caesar dressing. The Cline had decent acidity, but no grip of tannin (which I didn’t expect a lot of) which was fine with the leaner sirloin. I would have been more disappointed if we’d been eating rib-eyes. Then again, I probably would have picked a different wine.
Overall, I’d say it was a good wine, but an average Zinfandel. I think it would be fine for parties and pairing with items such as hamburgers, BBQ with a sweet sauce and smoked sausages off the grill. I’d even say it might do well with some pepperoni pizza.
Not feeling a haiku on this one.
